History of St Andrews Old Golf Course
Golf in Scotland was popular even before Mary, Queen of Scots and Presbyterianism in Scotland but it also pre-dates Christopher Columbus, King Henry VIII, Michelangelo, Leonard Da Vinci and Shakespeare.
1400’s – the golf game was invented in Scotland’s St Andrews area
1506 – King James IV bought golf clubs at St Andrews
1552 – St Andrews Old Course officially established
1764 – St Andrews Old Course changed from 22 to 18 holes (now the standard)
1863 – Current 18-hole layout established with 7 double (shared) greens
1873 – Scotland’s Tom Kidd wins the first Open Championship at St Andrews Old Course
2005 – Tiger Woods of USA wins his first Open Championship at St Andrews Old Course
2007 – Lorena Ochoa of Mexico wins the first Women’s Open Championship at St Andrews Old Course
