This area is the home of 3 of the oldest courses in England and is adjacent to the English Channel. The famous courses at Royal Cinque Ports and Princes are neighbours to the mighty Royal St Georges Open Championship Links, one of the toughest Open Championship courses on the rota. Hidden gems at Lydd and Littlestone compliment their more illustrious neighbours.

The Royal St George’s Golf Club located in Sandwich, Kent, England is one of the premier golf clubs in the United Kingdom, and one of the courses on The Open Championship rotation. It has hosted 14 Open championships since 1894, when it became the first club outside Scotland to host the championship. Past champions include Darren Clarke, Ben Curtis, Greg Norman, Sandy Lyle, Bill Rogers, Bobby Locke, Reg Whitcombe, Henry Cotton, Walter Hagen (on two different occasions), Harry Vardon (on two different occasions), Jack White and John Henry Taylor. It has also hosted The Amateur Championship on 13 occasions.

The club was founded in 1887 in a setting of wild duneland. Many holes feature blind or partially blind shots, although the unfairness element has been reduced somewhat, after several 20th century modifications. The club’s Challenge Trophy dates from 1888 and is one of the oldest trophies in golf; it has been contested annually except for war years. The course also possesses the deepest bunker in championship golf, located on its fourth hole.

Author Ian Fleming used the Royal St. George’s course under the name “Royal St. Marks” in his 1959 novel Goldfinger.

Royal St George’s is situated on the same stretch of coastline as Royal Cinque Ports Club and neighbouring Prince’s Golf Club, both former Open Championship venues.

The Deal course is traditionally laid out on a narrow stretch of land extending to Sandwich Bay, and the natural links terrain has been subtly used to provide a wide variety of challenges.

On almost every hole there is an abundance of large sand dunes which establishes the undulating character of the course and makes it unique. Unlike most other courses the fairways are just as undulating and it is seldom that a completely flat stance can be obtained other than on the tees.

As with all traditional seaside links, the wind is a major factor which has to be taken into account when deciding on club and shot selection.

Prince’s, with its 27 holes of championship Links is part of the 3 famous golf links in the Sandwich area and together with Royal St Georges and Cinque Ports, has hosted the Open Championship and is currently an Open Qualifying Course.

Prince’s offers all that is best in links golf with a centrally located clubhouse offering magnificent views over the course and Pegwell Bay.

The present-day 27-hole layout is the result of a 1950 re-design following war-time damage to the original course.

Lydd Golf Club

Lydd Golf Course, set on the Romney Marsh, is located approximately 45 minutes drive southeast of London and within easy commuting distance of Ashford, Kent.

A tactical blend of bunkering, strategically placed lakes, wispy rough and wind makes this course a real challenge.

The Course is of a links characteristic with well designed use of the natural terrain together with the introduction of several lakes to give it added character. Combine that with its natural beauty and you will be playing a course you will never forget.

Littlestone is a unique and atmospheric Championship Links Course laid out on the natural undulating links land between the famous Romney Marsh and the English Channel in the South East corner of Kent.

The coastline enjoys a unique microclimate that makes it one of the driest places in Britain. Littlestone is recognised as being one of the top 100 courses in England, indeed a very recent report by the R & A Agronomist states that the greens are ‘magnificent and they are some of the best examples of firm, true and well paced putting greens in the UK’. Littlestone has hosted many major championships and has a long and distinguished history. The Club is justifiably proud of again being chosen as a Final Qualifying venue for the 2011 Open Championship.
