Waterford Castle – County Waterford
Situated three miles from Waterford City, Waterford Castle is uniquely situated on its own private 310-acre island on the River Suir and is accessible only by a short ferry journey. A monastic settlement existed on the island between the 6th and 8th century and over the years; the powerful Fitzgerald family took control of the island. The present day castle was first constructed in the 15th century and was enlarged considerably over the course of the ensuing centuries.
The property was acquired 1987 and has been transformed into one of Ireland most luxurious castle hotels. The golf course, which was designed by Des Smyth, opened in 1992.
Waterford Castle provides guests with an enchanting experience as they take the ferry across to the Castle, relax over afternoon tea in the lavishly appointed drawing rooms or walk through the perfectly manicured gardens. Each of the bedrooms is tastefully decorated to a very high standard in keeping with the original architecture and provides stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Many rooms offer original four-poster beds and intricate wall tapestries. The golf course offers a real parkland challenge to even the most accomplished golfers
