Situated three miles from Waterford City, Waterford Castle is uniquely
situated on its own private 310-acre island on the River Suir and
is accessible only by a short ferry journey. A monastic settlement
existed on the island between the 6th and 8th century and over the
years; the powerful Fitzgerald family took control of the island.
The present day castle was first constructed in the 15th century and
was enlarged considerably over the course of the ensuing centuries.
The property was acquired by Eddie Kearns in 1987 and has been transformed
into one of Ireland most luxurious castle hotels. The golf course,
which was designed by Des Smyth, opened in 1992.
