Edinburgh & East – Dunbar – 6404 yds – Par 71
An Open qualifying venue for 2002 and one of the best courses on the East Lothian coast. It is clear that the seaside holes 4th to 17th give the course its flavour; the narrow strip of links land bounded by a wall on one side and the seashore on the other. Accuracy is the key with “out of bounds” being a possibility on ten of the holes.
A gentle start, two par 5s and a par 3 soon gets tough; the dogleg 7th with the green beside the wall, the 500 yard plus 9th followed by a long par 3 often played straight into the wind. Allegedly, Cromwell’s troops were encamped here before the Battle of Dunbar in 1603.
